A timber quote is not delivery-ready until the vehicle can reach a stable unloading point, someone is authorised to receive the load, long and heavy members can be handled safely, and storage is ready. Resolve those conditions before dispatch, not while the truck blocks the road.
Send the supplier a site-access brief

The 48-hour readiness check
- Reconcile the supplier confirmation with species, grade, treatment, dimensions, length, quantity and unit.
- Confirm final delivery window, truck type and whether the driver will contact before arrival.
- Walk the route and remove movable obstructions without creating unsafe ground.
- Prepare level bearers/dunnage off the soil, with weather protection and ventilation appropriate to the product.
- Allocate trained people or mechanical handling; keep children and the public outside the zone.
- Prepare the order sheet, camera and a place to quarantine discrepancies.
Long lengths and sheets behave differently
A 6 m structural member affects turning radius and manual handling. Plywood presents a large wind-catching face and vulnerable edges. Wet treated timber can be considerably heavier than a dry-looking calculation suggests. Plan by the actual pack, not by individual-piece intuition.
- Use mechanical assistance where the load or geometry requires it.
- Do not stand under suspended packs or between a moving load and fixed object.
- Keep people away from unsupported stack edges.
- Support long timber at enough points to limit sag and twist.
- Store sheets flat on level supports and protect edges from standing water.

Receive before the truck leaves where safe

Do not sign a statement that everything was received in good condition if an accessible check shows otherwise. If safe inspection cannot be completed immediately, write that limitation on the delivery record and follow the supplier's notification process promptly.
Build freight into a comparable quote
Compare total delivered scope: product subtotal, tax basis, pack/break fees, freight zone, crane or forklift charge, waiting time, return conditions and redelivery. A lower board rate can lose its advantage if long lengths require a different truck or the site needs two staged drops.
Regional freight questions for a national catalogue
A national comparison site may connect an order request with suppliers serving different areas. Ask which branch or yard will dispatch, whether the rate includes inter-branch transfer, and which postcodes or ferry routes attract surcharges. Rural delivery may require a safe roadside handover even when an urban branch advertises crane delivery.

Keep the delivery address and unload instructions on the supplier confirmation. A note sent only to a salesperson may not reach the dispatcher or driver.
After delivery: stabilise and reconcile
Move packs only with appropriate equipment and preserve labels. Reconcile quantities against project zones before cutting so a shortage is found while identifiers and dockets remain clear. Separate random lengths into a measured list; do not let the first installer consume long pieces intended for later uninterrupted spans.
- Photograph the stored pack and weather protection.
- Support boards at consistent intervals and align stickers vertically where used.
- Keep untreated interior timber away from ground splash.
- Notify discrepancies within the supplier's stated timeframe.
- Update the cut list with actual delivered lengths.
